Invocation 2010

15 July 2010

Invocation 2010 took place at St. Mary’s College, Oscott from 2 – 4th July. It was the first national discernment weekend for young people aged between 16-35 considering the religious life or priesthood. Over 400 people attended the weekend including religious, diocesan priests, seminarians and those discerning. People travelled from far and wide including two young women I met who had travelled from Holland for the event.

Talks were given by Fr. Christopher Jamison, Dr. Andrew O’Connell, Sr. Gabriel Davison and Archbishop Vincent Nichols. Dr. Andrew O’Connell’s talk was entitled “Standing out from the crowd: challenging the culture”. He talked about the role of the church in our modern society, saying it must “knock on the cocoon”, challenge the culture, question and look to the stars. Sr. Gabriel’s talk was about life in community and she posed the question “What can I be for God?”

There was also the opportunity to participate in workshops which included topics on prayer, witness today, into the deep, discernment and decision making, priesthood and catechesis. Throughout the weekend there was also time for reflection and personal prayer. The chapel was open all weekend and the liturgies included Mass, morning and evening prayer and a Blessed Sacrament procession around the grounds on the Saturday evening. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament throughout the night took place on Friday and Saturday nights.

The weekend was a wonderful occasion to meet and talk with people from all over the country who are considering religious life and the priesthood. It was very affirming for those who are searching to meet with others at the same stage as they are and to have the opportunity to talk to religious and priests. At the same time it was also affirming for the many religious and priests who attended the weekend.

There was a strong sense of community, particularly for those who camped out!
I enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone and even met up with a couple of people I know from my hometown of Hull!
