Sisters of Mercy with Cardinal Heenan, 1963

22 July 2010

British Pathe have released many of their archive films, one of which shows Sisters of Mercy dealing with the correspondence of Dr John Heenan, the new Archbishop of Westminster (former Archbishop of Liverpool). The short film was an exclusive interview with the newly appointed Archbishop of Westminster. You can hear Dr Heenan say that it is great that Catholics and Protestants are not fighting any more and he will promote working of all faiths and groups in community.

The film can be viewed at the website http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=43636.

If any of the Sisters can be recognised, the Archives would be pleased to know their identity. The website has a search facility so you might find more Sisters featured, as well as people and places that you know well. Warning: you may get rather engrossed once you start looking!

Update: Having found this exciting website last week, yesterday another link came through from the Yorkshire Film Archive. Their website is also fascinating: http://www.yfaonline.com. There are a couple of Sisters reading a newspaper whilst waiting for Pope John Paul II to arrive by helicopter at York: http://bit.ly/d3okcn. Another interesting film shows footage of bomb-damaged Hull, shot circa 1957: http://bit.ly/cwnan8 - does Anlaby Road feature?
