Gladly into the night...

03 February 2010

The CD is entitled ‘Gladly into the night’. It is taken from the much-loved poem by Minnie Louise Haskins which King George VI made famous when he used it for his 1939 Christmas broadcast,

‘I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year,

“Give me a light that I may safely tread into the unknown.”

And he replied, “Go out into the darkness

and put your hand into the hand of God.

That shall be to you better than light

and safer than a known way”...

...So I went forth and, finding the Hand of God,

Trod gladly into the night.

He led me towards the hills

And the breaking of day in the lone east...‘

For anyone with terminal illness or involved with end-of-life care, re-tracing the stages of Jesus’ walk to Calvary has particular poignancy, but Christian believers can step ‘gladly into the night’, for it is a journey from death to Life. Penny and Val hope that the CD will reach a wider audience too. Anyone for whom the ‘Stations of the Cross’ are a familiar devotion will surely welcome this moving CD. More than just a prayerful devotion, it engages with the painful reality of our own dying, whenever that time may be.

Combining the music of Val Goldsack with reflections written and presented by Sister Penny Roker RSM and extracts from scripture read by Mike Nolan,‘Gladly into the night’ is a deeply personal spiritual experience for anyone who seeks to follow Christ and to be assured of his companionship on our last journey.
