Handsworth is a member house of The Union of the Sisters of Mercy of England, Scotland and Wales.

It is a very significant place for all Sisters of Mercy because it was the second house, personally founded in England, by our Foundress Catherine McAuley and the last foundation before her death.

Today it is a house of Heritage, a place of pilgrimage and prayer with a wide outreach into the socially deprived area in which it is situated. The Sisters ministering in Handsworth formed a collaborative community in 2003 drawn from the three branches of the Sisters of Mercy of Great Britain - Union, Institute and Federation. Now in 2014 (Nov) Sr Helen Ryan from the Federation has returned to her original community in Midhurst, Sussex but the community still contains sisters from both the Union and Institute.  To learn more, visit St Mary's website at:
