About Us

Inspired and energised by the compassion, courage and vision of our foundress, Catherine McAuley, we strive by our life of prayer and service, to be the merciful face of Christ in every circumstance of our lives. We commit ourselves to making Mercy the business of our lives through the service of poor, sick and underprivileged people.

Animated by Catherine's example of trust in the providence of God and her deep intimacy with him, we call ourselves to live in right relationship with all creation - simply, reflectively and with enthusiasm.

The Institute was formed from the union of twenty autonomous Congregations and recognised as a Religious Congregation of Pontifical Right in November 1983. Currently there are three hundred and twenty Sisters ministering from seventy-five sites in Britain. Sisters also work in Ethiopia, Ireland, Kenya, Peru, and Romania.

The purpose of our joining together was to foster unity of spirit and purpose, share resources, broaden our horizons and to enable those who felt called to move into new ministries among the marginalised sectors of our society.
